Traveling Mercies

lyrics

I packed a bag and I headed north,
I headed west, I headed south.
In San Jose, I felt my spirit bend and crack.
So, I drove the coast and I saw the sights,
And I thought I'd never make it back.
But in L.A. I saw the face of God.
He laughed.

And I thought, “Don’t you worry,
Little girl. You’re doing fine.
Pick yourself up.
You’ve got a life.
You’re doing fine.”

I met a man in Santa Fe,
He found the light behind my eyes.
I’ve got a fire in me that burns anew each day.
A girl in Jackson sat beside me,
And I swear she read my mind.
Between the setting sun and dawn we found a way.

And they said, “Don’t you worry,
My dear friend. You’re doing fine.
Pick yourself up.
You’ve got a life.
That’s worth your time.”

And I remember how it feels
To be in Texas in the fall.
Nestled in the Austin warmth and Dallas sun.
Oklahoma, Alabama, Carolinas.
Seen ‘em all.
These weary legs have known a life lived on the run.

I’m Jersey-born and, in my heart,
I know I’ll always call it home.
But there’s a place in Tennessee I call my own.
Still, this rocky earth can’t drain the ocean from my bones.

So I say, “Don’t you worry,
My sweet child. You’re doing fine.
Pick yourself up.
You’ve got a life.
Don’t waste your time.”

Come on, now, don’t you worry,
My dear friend, you’re doing fine.
Pick yourself up.
You’ve got a life,
Stop wasting time.

You’re doing fine.
