Izzy 04:14
Lyrics: She was a dancer in her youth, A real Bronx-born dose of truth. She was 26 by the time she turned 14. She didn't play by any rules, She had no time for reckless fools. She had plans, she had dreams. She was swimming up the stream. And you could ask anybody About her And they'd say: "She's got a smile as wide As the Nile at high tide. She's got a laugh That could light you up Like fireworks in July. But don't you mess with her, I mean it. She's making moves, You best believe it. She's no wide-eyed kid, She says it, she'll deliver. She's a thriller. And they call her Izzy- She's Izzy the Killer." Now, she's a mother, she's a wife. Her kids bring meaning to her life. She's got five or six, And they all know who's in charge. She's the one who makes the rules, She'll be damned if they're all fools. They've got plans, they've got dreams. They're all swimming up the stream. And you could ask any one of them About her And they'd say: "She's got a smile as wide As the Nile at high tide. She's got a laugh That could light you up Like fireworks in July. But don't you mess with her, I mean it. She's making moves, You best believe it. She's no wide-eyed kid, She says it, she'll deliver. She's a thriller. And they call her Izzy- She's Izzy the Killer." She's got promise, She's got hope, She's got her family. She gave up the past, She knows she can't go back. 'Cause there's no telling, There's no knowing What will last. She was a dancer in her youth, A real Bronx-born dose of truth. She was 26 by the time she turned 14. She didn't play by any rules, She had no time for reckless fools. She had plans, she had dreams. She's still swimming up the stream.

Billy 03:42
Lyrics: Little Billy K Took his mama by the hand, Held on tightly by her side, 'Til he thought he couldn't stand. And on a summer's day, With his sister's and a plan, He set out to live a life And to grow into a man. Billy K, Where'd you go when they said You would never be the man That you thought of in your head? Billy K, Was your mama looking down? Did she try to help you out? Did your fate lead you astray, Bring you back, Take you away? Little Billy K, With a knapsack and a book Went to school to learn a lesson From a woman who mistook him For his father's son. And is that what he'd become? Mouths to feed and bills to pay, While the bottle fills his day. Billy K, Where'd you go when they said You would never be the man That you thought of in your head? Billy K, Was your mama looking down? Did she try to help you out? Did your fate lead you astray, Bring you back, Take you away? Little Billy K. Suddenly it's 'was' and 'were' And 'how he used to be.' A little boy without a mom Becomes a man No longer free. Little Billy K, Did you tousle your son's hair? Did you get to say good-by? Did you wonder who would care? And on a summer's day, Decades gone and brand new lives, Someone sits to tell your story And she wonders if she lies. Billy K, Why'd you go when they said You would never be the man That you pictured in your head? Billy K, Is your mama with you now? Can she finally help you out? Did your fate lead you astray, Bring you back, Take you away? Little Billy K.

Winnie 03:17
Lyrics: Winnie makes her bed, She dresses well, she acts polite. Looks out for those around her, Plays the mother role despite The fact that she's just a child Still herself. And it ain't right. But Daddy's drunk And mama's gone. And little sisters can't get on Without some help. So, Winnie's there, She's tryin' hard. She's by herself. Winnie's got the smarts, She's got the looks, she'll be all right. She's got her share of demons. Takes comfort in the night In the arms Of the wrong man. He holds her tight. Her dad's a drunk, Her mom's long gone, And little sisters can't get on Without some help. So, Winnie's there, She's taking charge. She's by herself. She's got a history of giving Good advice. If she would only take her own She might finally feel all right. And when she goes to bed There's one thing on her mind: She's keeping secrets. She's hiding from her darker side. Winnie's all grown up, She hides a child in plain sight. Alone, but not forgotten, She gets on about her life. She's no saint. She does her best. And that's all right. And when she's drunk, And feeling low, She sees her sisters and she knows She's doing fine. So, Winnie lives on In our hearts. And in our minds. Yeah, Winnie lives on In our hearts. And in my mind. She's on my mind. She's on my mind. You're on my mind.

Grace 04:25
Lyrics: An old dog howls As the porch swing sways. There’s a spirit in the air. It’s making moves, It’s taking names. Grace sits above it all, Hoping, planning for a change And she hears the voices call. And she knows: They’re whispering her name. “Sweet, sweet Gracie.” With her lipstick and her perfect hair, She’s got a smile that hides That she don’t care About anyone. Anyway… She’s the queen of kings, One of a kind. Can’t no one stop Her fire-proof mind. She’s got a mission all her own. She’s setting out. Her cover’s blown. And only devils know the dark That demons tell. Sweet, sweet Gracie... Church bell tolls, Empty bottle on the bed. There’s a haze about the room. It’s hanging close. It’s in her head. She can’t remember how she got here Or what she done. It’s just the voices calling out. Calling out… To have some fun. “Sweet, sweet Gracie…” With her lipstick and her perfect hair, She’s got a smile that hides That she don’t care About anyone. Anyway… She’s the queen of kings, One of a kind. Can’t no one stop Her fire-proof mind. She’s got a mission all her own. She’s setting out. Her cover’s blown. And only devils know the dark That demons tell. Sweet, sweet Gracie. Sweet, sweet Gracie. Take a look into her eyes. You’ll see the mark. She’ll give ‘em hell. Sweet, sweet Gracie. Sweet, sweet Gracie. Sweet, sweet Gracie. Only devils know the darkness You can tell.

about

When I moved to Nashville in January of 2015 I had about seven songs to my name. I knew it wasn't going to cut it. So, I set out to build a repertoire of songs. A song cycle seemed like a surefire way to find inspiration that would result in multiple songs instead of just one. Thus we have the stories of the Kane siblings.

Back in October, I messaged Mike of Two Tree Studios and told him that I had an idea. I had these songs and these stories to tell. And I didn't want it to be a huge production, I wanted to get into the studio, put the songs down, and get them out into the world for everyone to hear.

All told, there were six Kane siblings: Winnie, John, Eddie, Izzy, Billy, and Grace. While this EP includes four of those names and, seemingly, four of those stories, what you hear in these songs is actually a more cohesive telling of one overarching story. The songs named for Izzy and Winnie are the closest to being solely about the individuals, while the songs named for Grace and Billy are more of a hodgepodge of the lives of all of the siblings. I took this route for a few reasons.

First, I knew the most about Izzy and Winnie. Izzy was my grandmother and Winnie, her older sister, is often spoken of amongst my living family members. While I was aware of Grace and Billy, their stories were less defined to me. So, I took a little bit of Winnie, a little bit of Izzy, a little bit of their parents and I put together a narrative that I hoped would intrigued the audience and contribute to the complete picture of the Kane family.

The second reason I wrote the songs as they are is because it was what I was given. There are many members of my family whom I could have sought out and of whom I could have asked clarifying questions. But I didn’t want to do that. I was interested in the oral tradition as it stands. My hope was not to be disrespectful to the past, or disingenuous, but to comment on the way information is passed down from generation to generation. Izzy and Winnie were readily available in my memory, despite the fact that I never knew either of them while they were living. Grace and Billy were both present, but less complete. Eddie and John were almost entirely absent from my knowledge.

Ultimately, Kane, while based in truth, is meant to be an artistic interpretation of what truth and family and history mean. If you find yourself reading this note prior to listening to the music, I hope that it will enrich the experience, rather than diminishing it.

I hope you enjoy.
