A little bird is perched on the back
Of a leopard-spotted horse
And they’re carrying the Lonestar State.
Sun goes down and they settle in.
Now Mother Earth can cradle them,
While tomorrow bides its time
And holds their fate.
For the horse, I don’t know why
That bird decided not to fly,
Or how they carried off that great big place.
A simple breeze can change the course
Of the biggest life without much force.
It’ll lead you down the path
You’re meant to take.
So I close my eyes and count the days,
My heart ablaze.
‘Cause such little lives don’t know the ways
That they amaze.
And I feel just fine.
‘Cause in some way they’re mine.
So, these three things, I’ll keep.
‘Cause they protect me.
Yeah, these three things, I’ll keep.
If they’ll let me.
In twenty years a lot can change,
But a lot can also stay the same.
If a love is true it’s hard to turn the page.
I don’t claim to know what comes,
But fortune can’t outlast the sun,
So I’ll take my chance and let go of the rain.
And I hold my breath and count the days,
My heart ablaze.
‘Cause such little things don’t know the ways
That they amaze.
And I feel just fine.
‘Cause in some way they’re mine.
So, these three things, I’ll keep.
‘Cause they protect me.
Yeah, these three things, I’ll keep.
If they’ll let me.
Hold my hand, call me a friend,
Don’t leave me hanging.
Let me be there as you learn and as you grow.
I’ll be there if you move on,
If you forget me.
When you turn up at my door, don’t ever go.
‘Cause I feel just fine
That in some way they’re mine.
So, these three things, I’ll keep.
‘Cause they protect me.
Yeah, these three things, I’ll keep.
If they’ll let me.
